To help heat your home effectively, the following steps can make a big difference:
- Heat your home evenly. Keep your home warm enough to avoid cold surfaces. During very cold weather, it’s better to keep the heating on at a lower setting throughout the day, rather than turning it off completely as very cold rooms can provide ideal conditions for mould to grow. It's recommended to keep your home, where possible, between 16°C and 21°C. Bedrooms can be a bit cooler as night. To avoid condensation issues, the temperature in your home shouldn't drop below 14°C.
- If your home has heating controls, such as thermostatic valves on radiators or room thermostats or timers, use these to control the heating throughout your home to rooms which are used more frequently.
- Allow space for air circulation. Cold spots can exist behind furniture or against uninsulated walls. Ensure furniture is not pushed directly against outside walls to allow the air to move around the room.
- Conserve heat: Close curtains at dusk to reduce heat loss and use draught excluders to retain warmth.
