Please take care responding to messages encouraging you to apply for benefits or payments. Scam text messages claiming that they are about to miss out on help with their heating bills are on the rise and are currently doing the rounds with bogus calls and messages about the 'Winter Heating Allowance' being sent by fraudsters posing as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Always take five and remember that the DWP and other official government departments will never ask you for personal or sensitive information via text or email.
If you receive an unexpected message about heating payments, please be cautious. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, please:
- Do not click any links
- Do not share any personal information
- Do not share any financial information
- Check directly with the organisation through their official website or telephone number.
There’s also a free service to report scam texts, by forwarding them to 7726.
