Bogus callers (rogue traders) are criminals who claim to be someone they’re not to get into your home.
They could target anyone at any time, but they often focus those who may be more vulnerable such as the over-60s. They’ll often pretend to be from a place of authority - your housing association, contactor working with your landlord, a council department or a utility company. What they want to do is gain access to your home from your personal details to money and valuables.
They may offer to carry out work on your house, garden or driveway. In reality, they charge inflated prices for shoddy or unnecessary work - or simply disappear with your hard-earned money doing no work at all.
Tips to keep safe at home
If in doubt – keep them out - legitimate callers will be happy to wait outside while you call a trusted number to verify their identity.
Remember - never give keys to workmen or tradesmen unless you are certain you can trust them – copies of keys are easily made.
